Schools and sun

There are days when constituency life is very good. Today is just such a day.

My agenda involves travelling round in the sunshine to visit three local schools as part of “MP’s Back to School Day”. The first one, King Ecgbert’s, involved a chat to their year 10 group (15 year olds) which was a challenge in terms of getting this age group interested in politics. I don’t know if we succeeded, the pupils would have to judge that.

The second visit was absolutely delightful. This was to Totley Primary School where the year 5 and year 6 groups (10 and 11 year olds) had done an excellent presentation on why everyone should have the opportunity for education. They highlighted the fact that 100 million children around the world are not currently in school, many of them in Africa with girls more excluded than boys. Their level of interest in the subject was a credit to them and their school.

Now off to King Edward VII School for the last session on a sunny Friday. It may be a little hard keeping their interest…
