Love FON!

I am just back from holidaying in a small Castilian town near to Salamanca called Bejar.

My inbox filled up and I needed to push some urgent work stuff through the email account. I was desperate.

My work provides me with an iPass account but the supposed access points in the Bejar area did not exist. These were listed as being in two service stations in the town, but having hung around both of them with a laptop (a noticeably abnormal activity in that locale) I found no wireless networks at all.

The single internet cafe I found would not let me pay to connect a cable to my laptop – I had to use their PCs which was no good to me.

One bar allegedly had wifi but looked too much like the local substance-scoring joint for comfort.

So, I walked the streets checking for APs with my PDA and to my surprise as I walked into a square right by the town public gardens I found a FON access point.

3 euros later via PayPal for 24 hours of FON access (a couple of hours of which I used sitting comfortably on a park bench in the midnight warmth) and I had fixed what needed fixing and could go back to my holiday.

Thank you unknown Fonero of Bejar. And thank you FON for providing a better service than anybody else in that location. (Looking at the FON maps service now I find there are several access points in the same small town which is impressive).

Like all good solutions, simple yet effective…
